The boy and I are doing well. We've been dating about two and a half months or so. No complaints. He's fun, funny and smart. And he loves to cook and has a great appreciation for good food. In fact, he's cooked for me a few times and I've cooked for him.
Yesterday we decided to go over to Devon Avenue, which is center of Desi culture in the city. Need anything Indian or Pakistani? Head to Devon. We wanted to shop, check out the produce, spices and baked goods.
I'd never been to Devon before and it was great! We bought so much great, tasty stuff. Patel Bros. Grocery was the hit! We bought fresh, hot naan, yogurt, chilis...all the things to make Achar Gosht for dinner. Actually, we bought the achar gosht spice mix, so I suppose we cheated a little bit. It was really tasty.
Here's the other kicker though. The boy found out that I've never eaten a fresh, whole artichoke and was shocked. Is that weird? Have y'all all eaten one? I love artichoke hearts, but I've never eaten or cooked a fresh one. So the boy insisted on fresh artichokes, too. He was on artichoke duty and we decided that we needed hollandaise sauce to go with it. I'm not really a fan of hollandaise sauce, but figured I'd give it a whirl. I've heard horror stories about people making hollandaise.
Folks...it was perfect! It was easy! Most of all...it was spectacular! Fresh artichokes with fresh, homemade hollandaise sauce! I am in love! The boy said it was the best hollandaise he'd ever had.
All of these things were new to me! I love new things.

You're kidding, right? About never having an artichoke? (a whole one?)
You steamed it, right?
And then plucked the leaves and scraped them across your teeth?
See - I grew up eating them - and thought everyone had. Until I made them for the Phoenix roommates one night. I was so excited to introduce them to something new.
They.were.not.impressed.
"All this work for that??" they asked.
"But the heart! It's your reward!"
Still.not.impressed.
"You can buy them in a jar - and they're pickled."
*sigh*
That is so cool.
Hollandaise, when you make it fresh, is so tasty.
Never made the whole artichoke, but I've been served the leaves. Yum.
You had hot naan? I can't find that here. Indian is rare, but I can find you good que and plenty of authentic cuban and mexican places...
I prefer to dip in butter to holandaise. Too heavy. But then I grew up in NH and we dipped our finest food in butter. Once in LA my friends mom made fresh artichoke soup. She scraped several artichokes (not using teeth) for it. Now that's hard work!
Now that you have a good source for naan, you should try Nigella Lawson's recipe for naan pizza (Nigella Express). Let me know how it is!
Well, I haven't bought a fresh artichoke either. I mean, there are lots of other easy to prepare greens to eat, there's no reason to buy one that's hard to cut, is there? :)
Like your blog :)
Mit -- I'm still dreaming about that artichoke heart!
Suzanne -- surprisingly, I've had some great Mexican here. Not Cuban yet though.
Anna -- EVERYTHING is better dipped in butter. I think I'll have to check out the naan pizza recipe. (I have some naan left in the freezer)
Real Mother -- I have to say, the artichoke was worth it!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE fresh artichokes. I usually steam them with lemons and garlic. I also love to mix up dipping sauces. A Garlic Aioli is nice, however I also love to dip in a curry mayonaise. YUMMM
